last night i emerged from a bath of hot water into the cool breeze of a silent night
i looked out at my muddy yard and inhaled it
the pear tree was empty of leaves
i said a prayer for the first time in a very long time
i said "dear divine universe" (this, i thought, was a decidedly general yet beautiful enough greeting)
